Joyce A. Tan appears on Future Law Podcast
Join our Joyce A. Tan for a frank and illuminating conversation on lawyering in the age of frontier law issues and new legal technologies at the Future Law Podcast series, in collaboration with the Singapore Academy of Law. Some key points she shares with Prof. Michael Madison of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law:
- When working on frontier legal issues (i.e. novel areas for which there is no precedent or roadmap), it is necessary to free ourselves of the narrow mindset that we practice in silos of legal expertise, and to ask: what exactly are the "legal skills" that make us lawyers?
- On the adoption of AI and technology tools for legal services, the ultimate question is whether any technology can fully simulate the fullness of nuanced human judgment which lies at the core of lawyering.
- For young lawyers, to be comfortable with the certainty of uncertainty, and to develop and use a structure of essential skills in the way they tackle any problem – learning how and where to fish, without knowing if particular waters might have fish to be had.
….and other insights. Happy listening!
